Seraphine
Séraphine Louis, known as "Séraphine de Senlis" ("Séraphine of Senlis") (1864–1942), was a French painter in the naïve style. Self-taught, she was inspired by her religious faith and by stained-glass church windows and other religious art. The intensity of her images, both in color and in replicative designs, are sometimes interpreted as a reflection of her own psyche, walking a tightrope between ecstasy and mental illness.
Having some time this morning I found this wonderful French made movie about the life of Seraphine Louis the Naive style painter from the early 20th century. It is so inspiring to happen on this primitive, raw but tender true life story. I had no knowledge of this woman, her paintings or this movie made about her. There is an intricacy and quiet walk of life reflected in the private mind and soul of a woman who only wanted to glorify what she believed she was called to do... Paint. I loved the inside world that Seraphina lived in order to survive life. Her ability to see the beauty and the darkness in nature, touch it, smell it, and believe that it was her calling to bring it to life even in the face of fear. Somehow, I don't find myself feeling sad for her. She gave birth to her true self and had a place to put the pain. The communing with nature the higher force in her life reflected in always returning out of the darkness and into the light breathing deeply, facing the demons hiding in the flowers and believing in the ever presence beauty of love, however it is experienced, in life ~
